Tossing Garter
Where did the tradition of tossing the Brides Garter come from ?
Is this done only here in the United States ?
this custom actually orginated in france in around the 16th century (1500′s ). as it woman’s undergarments evolved to include silk stockings, the need for holding them up also arose, hence The Garter was created. it was an undergarment made of white lace which held up the stockings.
when a couple was married in those days, it was the custom for proof of consumation of the marriage to be offered to the guests who were normally stationed just outside of the bed chamber, waiting for the bridal sheets. the stained sheets were proof of the brides virginity and of the consumation of the marriage. once they were handed out to the waiting guests, it was considered good luck for one of the groomsmen to be able to steal a piece of the brides clothing, so they normally dashed into the bed chamber to steal one of her Garters, which was then displayed on his hat for the remainder of the celebration which normally lasted a couple of days.
the custom was so popular however that the groomsmen often began to actually attack the bride to get her garter, often upsetting her and turning her over to get it in plain view of everyone, so it the tradition was changed to the groom being the one to remove and toss the garter out into the crowd outside of the bed chamber in order to protect his bride from injury or embarassment.
as the proof of virginity and consumation became less and less popular and the couple demanded their privacy, the garter ceremony became incorporated into the reception and is now normally done after the bridal bouquet toss. in today’s weddings, it is no longer a matter of a good luck symbol but is now supposed to mean that the man who catches the garter is going to be the next guy to get married.
